Keep your distance?

Is this a maritime thing? Shouldn't it flash red for 'danger! I iz a cliff, don't sail into me... You will so lose!'?

I hadn't spotted this before, well, not till a couple of hours ago, despite walking past it every day.

It's very unassuming by daylight... But by night it does the whole green flashing above an upside triangle in an attention seeking stylie...
