The rugged coastline at Southerdown.

This is the view which would have been seen from Dunraven Castle had it still have been standing. It is a very rocky coastline and is a fossil hunters delight. It was formed in a shallow sea near the equator many millions of years ago and is comprised of layers of Limestone and Shale. The shale gets washed away by the action of the sea and the cliffs collapse as can be seen  in the photograph.  This part of our coast is very much a ships graveyard and scores of ships have come to grief along this stretch. Many people walk along this part of the coast and some are unaware as to how quickly they can be trapped by a rising tide and rescues by the RNLI, coastguards and helicopters and are quite commonplace, regardless of these facts, it is still a fantastic coastline!
