"Here's looking at you..."

Imagine my surprise and delight to see a small flock of rare sheep newly installed in a nearby field.

(I come from a farming background in Wales and sheep featured a great deal in my childhood and early years).

However, I did not recognize this breed.

“What are they?”

“Castlemilk moorit,” replied the owner, a young blonde police officer (yes I know you can tell you are getting on a bit when the police officers look young, no matter… back to the sheep.)

This is a relatively new breed of sheep and you are unlikely to come across many.
Their website says:
“During the early years of the twentieth century the late Sir Jock Buchanan-Jardine began a breeding programme on his Castlemilk Estate in Dumfriesshire. Using Manx Loghtan, moorit Shetland and wild Mouflon, he developed a breed to beautify his parkland and provide fine, kemp free moorit coloured.”

They are small, dainty with brown wool- a definite asset to the area.
