Where the Dark Ages began?

Today was the long awaited walk with Max Adams, the author. His was one of the special interest walks we organise in the festival and the title "Where the Dark Ages began?" was an intriguing one.

We went by coach to Bewcastle and then walked back to Birdoswald Roman Fort. It was misty all morning and there was light rain in the afternoon, so much better than the forecast that we did not mind. No one cancelled despite the bad forecast, which just goes to show that Max is very popular.

If you ever have the chance to hear him speak, take it. He has a wonderful way with words and he thinks about how different aspects of any period of history are linked.

His new book, In the Land of the Giants is published this week and he signed copies we bought today, out of the boot of his car.


There were 24 of us out on the walk and we ended at Birdoswald Fort, sheltering in the tearoom for a final talk from Max.
