The ivy 'tree' that has formed itself atop an orphan fence post is currently covered with sweet-smelling green flowers that attract a host of bees, wasps, hoverflies and butterflies eager to sup on its rich (49% sugar!) nectar and to collect its pollen after other food sources have dried up.
I tried without success to capture the bees' yellow saddlebags before they bumbled off to deliver their harvest to the home hive. This red admiral butterfly was a lazier customer at the sugar fountain.
(The urge to destroy ivy wherever it clings should be resisted. Left alone, the climbing form with multi-lobed leaves transforms into the mature, simple-leaved, branched form which produces the flowers that support insect life.)
Apologies for my disappearance over recent days. I've been without my telephone/broadband connection since Sunday. It's supposed to be restored tomorrow. We shall see.
