Seafaring heritage

I love this symbolic anchor nestled in a corner of Ocean Village at Southampton — to me it is a figurative icon of the city and port.
After all the city has a maritime heritage and big ships, cruise liners, ferry boats  and sailing yachts and motor cruisers all share the same waters, and the anchor is the one thing common to all of them.
Here in Ocean Village it is the epitome of the flavour of recreational sail boats and cruisers. And of course, the village is home for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, and can count itself as the base for a host of international sailing events.
While the Village has changed very much over the past years, the focus on water activity remains very much at the heart of the community. Which is completely appropriate for a city with such a seafaring heritage.
The worlds of commercial shipping and recreational boating may seem to be miles apart, but in this port they sit side by side in complete unison.
The Ocean Village anchor and another in the city centre are an important reminder of  that
