Buxton
We had a stroll around Buxton this morning, after Tom was told off for sitting in someone's garden, that he thought was part of the hotel, but wasn't!.
After battling my way through "Testament of Youth" by Vera Brittain earlier this year, I was determined to see the Dome in Buxton that was turned into a military hospital in World War I, and was where Vera Brittain trained as a nurse. What stuck in my head was that the nurses were only allowed to walk around the circumference of the building and couldn't take a short cut across the diameter which would have been a welcome short cut. The Dome is now part of the University of Derby and there are only certain times you can take photos in it "out of respect for the students". Tom got into trouble here too as a student complained to security he was "photographing her". It's always me me me with the young folk, isn't it? He showed the security guard the photos he'd taken with his fisheye lens and pointed out that it was a) within the time frame when photography was allowed and b) it was of the architecture. The blip is of the Crescent which is being renovated along with the spa baths, and in the background you will see the Dome.
After Buxton we headed for the airport on some terrifying country road that the GPS chose for us.
We booked ourselves into the Radisson Blu that is in the terminal we will be leaving from tomorrow. We dropped the car off and got the chit to say it was in perfect condition. I'm glad they didn't notice the smell of puke!
We had a great room overlooking the apron, and then the power went out. Infact it was off in the entire terminal so we raced to the restaurant to try and grab a table before everyone else did when the power came back on. They reckoned 20 minutes so we got a drink. No power, so we got another drink. Then they brought out bread. (See the extra blip!). Then carrot cake. Still no power. "Bag of crisps anyone?" "Ham sandwich?" Three hours later the power came back on and we got dinner, and the drinks were on the house. I have to commend the Radisson staff for the professional way they dealt with all the whingers!
