Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

By NannaK

Once upon a time....

There was film.

Either developed by me in the darkroom (I had one in the basement when I was a kid with my brownie camera and one later as a young Mom) or, mostly, taken to the neighborhood drug store where I got to know Warren, the photo guy, very well.  And the photos are mostly in boxes or albums and easy to see, (with some patience.)   I found this very old roll of exposed “verichrome”  I suppose I’ll try to find someone to develop it…

(this might be boring if you don’t care about such — so just skip it…but I’m going to record my thoughts anyway…)

Then came the digital age and now I have cds and dvds and lots of external drives full.  I have 70,000 photos  (4 years worth) on my recent Apple Aperture program when Aperture decided to stop supporting it.,    When I got the Yosemite OS, I couldn’t access them at all!!!!  :-(  Switched to Lightroom the beginning of this year but didn’t trust the plug in to put all those photos from aperture on there (lots of reasons)  so put them on the new “Photos” .  It’s terrible!  (but I did manage to get my blip folder off.)   but I want the aperture photos the way I had them organized!   My one-on-one has expired but I managed to talk to a live person who gave me a genius bar appointment—but right before that for some strange reason I was able to access my Aperture.  (?)  Well I went anyway —the genius I got didn’t do photos and knew nothing about aperture or lightroom! !(he did music) but he was able to give me some worthwhile tips anyway.   So at least now I can move the photos I want out of Aperture into Lightroom without doing all 70K.   IF I want to take the time.  I do NOT want all 70K.   I wanted to look at this 2003 (not THAT old? ) cd ( not DVD)of a trip to Spain…but can’t seem to figure out how to do it efficiently or with a slide show.  OH my, there are a lot just like it…the computer keeps  changing ... Too fast.   Ridiculous....

Probably will never look at most of these photos.  Am I crazy to have them?   Who is going to care?  Such a burden for our kids —or they’ll just toss them…    ( it's ok, kids!)   I’m definitely trying to delete more as I go along these days.     The Blurb or similar books are the best.  The paper will not get obsolete or the program not workable.    Easy to put on a shelf and put your hands on and just LOOK.   Even all those slides I digitized are at risk unless I print them somehow.    The perspective on all the ways I’ve had to record life is a bit mind boggling….  there are definitely too many pictures… and I keep taking them…(I’m hopeless about  pictures) )  One of the reasons I love blip is that ONE photo a day —It makes me choose ONE.  And I do love the blip books I’ve made.
But I'm not sure it's all "better" than "once upon a time"....

Sorry for the long harangue.   Went to Oskar’s 10 year old peewee football game on a beautiful day today.… that’s worth another harangue …..on another day….
