A is for....
Art and Architecture and Atrocious weather.
This is Manchester Art Gallery. It was closed by the time I got there after work. Note the moist nature of the stone fascia this is due to constant pissing rain inclement weather conditions.
This Grade I listed building was designed by Sir Charles Barry and opened in 1824.
It is the only public building he designed in the Greek neo classical style.
The building was the home of the Royal Manchester Institution (merchant types and local artists keen to prove Manchester was not lacking in culture and taste).
In 1882 ownership was transferred to Manchester Corporation by Act of Parliament, no less! They got the building and all the art collections.
So now it belongs to the people of Manchester. (In theory at least. That is what they said about the Free Trade Hall and look what happened to that!!!!)
