Bagmati

I've been walking to work the last while to find my way around the city. I walk with an umbrella for shade, mouth mask for the pollution, sunglasses and I have a rucksack on....I don't blend in well.

This is a picture as I cross one of the bridges on the Bagmati river. The Bagmati river stinks, it's a rubbish dump and I think by the smell the main sewage "system". This picture is an example of the the way the road works here. Anything goes but avoid the cows.

Further up the Bagmati river is one of the most significant Hindu temples in the world, the Pashupatinath Temple. The temple is a UNESCO world heritage site and it is regarded as the most sacred among the temples of Lord Shiva (Pashupati). At this holy place Hindus are cremated on the banks of the river. The more important you were the higher up the river you are cremated. The body is dipped in the river three times before cremation and the relatives of the dead bathe in the Bagmati River or put holy water on their bodies as it's considered to purify the people spiritually.
