Crathes Castle
We started the day at the Cullerlie Stone Circle enclosing eight cairns which had contained cremated remains and is believed to be about 4000 years old and Bronze Age.
Then we visited Drum Castle which, until it became owned by the National Trust for Scotland in 1975, has been the home of the Irvine family since 1325 when Robert the Bruce granted the castle to William de Irwyn. The tower was started around 1200AD and recently a small room has been discovered hidden within the 12 feet thick walls.
Finally a visit to the 16th century castle at Crathes where there is so much to see both within the castle walls and the grounds and although we have been there several times we always seem to see and learn more each time. The photo is of the castle taken from the gardens which are truly magnificent.
Each of the six castles that we have visited over the last three days apparently have ghosts which have been seen or felt by many people including Queen Victoria. Whether they are gullible or there is a logical explanation to the mysterious happenings I don’t know, but I’m certain there are no ghosts in my modern house.
