Unique

I think you could describe St Mary's Church, Wreay as unique: there is nothing like it anywhere. And here it is in a little Cumbrian village, just outside Carlisle.

It was built between 1840 and 1842 under the personal direction of Sarah Losh, an extraordinary lady of an old Cumbrian family, an architect and an intellectual, a pioneering and imaginative woman. I recently read a fascinating book about Sarah Losh - The Pinecone by Jenny Uglow - but had not got round to actually visiting her Church until today. (Why we were in Carlisle will be revealed tomorrow!)

What a place it is! Magical, surprising and very, very beautiful.

I will say no more about it at the moment, although there is a huge amount that could be said. I am certainly going to visit again. I will just leave you with the amazing view that greets you as you open the door.
