Drummond's aster

Symphyotrichum drummondii. This aster occurs in the eastern part of Kansas as well as in most states east of Kansas. It is a common plant of wooded areas on dry rocky soils. It grows in the wilder parts of our yard at the base of trees and among trees along the creek. The individual flowers are tiny, only about a half inch across. This plant is named for Thomas Drummond I should imagine, a Scottish 19th century botanist who explored as far west as the Rockies.

A pleasant day, not very hot but not very sunny either.
