Silage or ullage?
Please look large then read on
The field in front of me has been mown. STBO! However repeated rain has prevented it being harvested, apart from 4 bales which will inevitably rot. The forecast for later today does not inspire confidence that the field will be lifted anytime soon.
NOW, if you look closely just left of centre, where the top of the brown field meets the edge of a field and hedgerow there is a white dot. (Try again, go on) That white dot is fertilizer, two tons of it in those huge white bags you see being delivered to farms. There were 12 of those bags sitting there yesterday. The other 10 tons is now part of the ploughed field. We have gotten into some heavy handed practices in our farming methods, wiping out insect life, feeding crops to feed our burgeoning population, thereby causing pollutant runoff into rivers, streams and ground acquiffers.
If we are happy with our "progress" so far why is there so much opposition to GM crops? Apparently we can produce disease and insect resistant crops that will reduce our use of insecticides, fertilizers and increase yield.
