Call of the Wild
Mammoth Hot Springs lies near the northern entrance to the park, Gardiner, MT. the Lodge is home to many elk who gather daily on the well-fertilized lawns of our hotel. The large harem is called together by the gent bugling under our hotel window *extra*. I love that call with its high squeal followed by a "huh huhhuh" at the end. Maybe I was a cow elk in another life?
The travertine terraces and Orange Spring Mound are seen in *extras*, too. See GlassRoad's blip for details re: how they were formed. These huge formations are a stone's throw from the lodge.
We exited the park via the Beartooth Highway...noted as one of the 10 most beautiful roads in the world by Charles Kuralt. GlassRoad has a lovely picture of some of its 68 twisted miles to go up to 10, 947 feet. We met the antique cars in Cook City and traveled along with them...up and over the peaks....to the Rock Creek Resort, where we spent the night and had dinner in the venerable old Piney Dell Restaurant.
