Through the window
All though we do walk round here quite often, it is a while since I saw inside.and it looked very different then. see my blip here
My brother-in-law used to visit Oakwell Hall when he was at school, and wanted to see what it looked liked now. That was before they built the M62 motorway!
So we all had a look round the house and grounds.
A few years ago Kiklees Council were thinking of closing it, but I am so glad they didn't.
Last year they received a grant of £257,289 from the Arts Council of England's Renaissance Strategic Support Fund.
This has gone to update the facilities, including shop and toilets, and also the visual effects inside the hall.
One I very much liked was a film of Charlotte Bronte visiting the hall, and then telling us how it came to be the fictional " Fieldhead" in her novel Shirley.
Very cleverly filmed in black and white, Actors all in period costumes, and shown in a picture frame.
The whole house had been spruced up, but then we learnt it was the official opening of the new facilities etc. this afternoon.
We hadn't a lot of time to look round, as G& J were coming back to our house for lunch, and then had to leave early.
So I am going to go back on my own again later for another visit.
A bargain at £2.50!!!! ( The grounds are free)
This is the website of Friends of Oakwell Hall which shows more photos, and tells about the history of this 16th Century Manor House.
