High above Harrogate

The Harlow Hill Observatory Tower is the highest building and view point in Harrogate at 700ft above sea level. It was built by John Thompson in 1829 and is now grade II listed. Organised by the Harrogate Astronomical Society as part of the annual Heritage Open Days festival, the tower was open to visitors today and yesterday. Thankfully the weather was somewhat better than yesterday so a visit was not to be missed.
To the left of centre you can see the red brick of the International Conference Centre, and to the left of this is the Majestic Hotel.
It was only in passing the other day that I noticed that the tower was to be open to visitors this weekend, and I had never realised the significance of this rather unassuming structure before now. It was a pleasant and fascinating surprise.
The tower used to have a domed top although this is no longer the case. It stands about 150 feet away from the water tower which featured in this blip a few days ago.

The tower itself is a plain square stone structure some 90 feet high with 92 steps to the top.
The adjacent building appears to be a private residence, I understand this was sold by the council in 1990 to fund the restoration of the tower.
Apparently you can see the Humber bridge on a very clear day.
