Tikal - Flores

Had an amazing day at Tikal in Flores today. A collection of Mayan temples that are incredibly impressive.

We arrived in Flores yesterday evening and had a good group of people on our bus. Joanna from Belize was there as well as an Australian couple Sam and Cat, and two English girls Venetia and Amy. We all booked on to the same sunrise tour and were collected at 2.30am this morning. Our guide Luis was brilliant and along with 6 other people in our group (three South Africans and three Israelis) we all climbed to the top of one of the highest temples in Tikal for sunrise. Unfortunately sunrise wasn't as good as we hoped because it was quite cloudy but that didn't take away from how spectacular Tikal is and by being there so early we got to see it before the tourist rush.

From the top of the temple we could see the jungle canopy stretching for miles and saw spider monkeys making their morning journey through the trees. Then our guide brought us around the different temples that are in the jungle and we saw howler monkeys, tucans and tarantulas, and climbed the varying mayan buildings.

That night myself, Lou, Joanna, Venetia and Amy capped off a great day with dinner and cocktails on a rooftop bar in flores!
