How many does he need?

Runners say the optimum number of pairs of shoes is one more than you already have. Mr Rat bought a new pair yesterday (easy to spot as not muddy yet), how long before he says he needs some more?!
They are for smooth surfaces, rough trails, muddy trails and mixed terrain
