Longhorn beetle (monochamus grandis)

Today I took my daily hunt out to Ooyama near Isehara, Japan.  One of the first things I spotted was this fantastic long-horn beetle.

We see the blue/black/white Anoplophora malasiaca with some regularity in Chigasaki, but this was something special for me. The colors aren't as impressive, but this thing was huge.

This picture was taken just as it decided it wasn't willing to take any more flashes to the face ..the extra photo shows it winging it's way back to the forest. 10 times more mental in real life.
