Alkhornet

This almost alpine peak was formed by an explosion which caused tons of rock to breakaway about 5 years ago. Proof that geology is happening all around us all the time. Can you spot one of our expedition guides on the lookout?

On the lower slopes is where we had our closest encounter with the Svalbard reindeer. (see extra shot) Their only difference to other reindeer is their shorter legs. And high on the cliffs were yet more erns, kittiwakes and skuas.

Our last trip of the day and indeed our holiday was to a place called Colesbukta. (see extra shots ) It was an old Russian settlement with deserted houses, warehouse and offices. It was settled in 1939 and after the war mining took place at nearby Grymant and this area was used as a port. It was thought it may have been used as a gulag?

Well, what can I say...... It's been the trip of a lifetime. The scenery and wildlife have been spectacular and memories will always be with me........oh, and my photos too.
