Was It Really So Long Ago

Succisa pratensis

Devil's-bit Scabious, has roots ending abruptly as though bitten off by the devil. Presumably this was a conclusion reached in the days when witch-dunking was used as a means of establishing guilt. Flowering from June to October, this plant is a magnet for both honey and bumblebees in our garden - there's a real buzz about it and the adjacent Perovskia.

Bombus pascuorum, the Common Carder Bee takes prime position atop the bloom, with a honey bee.

I found a moment to take this picture whilst taming the wilderness that we like to call the garden.
