Arlington Row weavers cottages, Bibury
We had a wonderful meal out with Una at Raymond Blanc's brasserie in Cheltenham last night. Today we have wandered around Gloucestershire despite the continuing rain and had another good meal at a country pub in Sapperton. Then we drove to Bibury, where I bought some fresh trout from the specialist fish farm, which uses the old millponds of the now disused Arlington Mill.
I didn't walk with all the other tourists across the River Coln and on the circular loop past this row of cottages, although I have done previously. By the time I came to find a viewpoint the brief burst of sunshine had disappeared leaving a scudding clouds to darken the view. But I still like it.
The picturesque Arlington Row cottages were built in 1380 as a monastic wool store. This was converted into a row of cottages for weavers in the seventeenth century. The cloth woven there was hung on wooden timber frames on Rack Isle, after being degreased using the fulling process at Arlington Mill.
