Day 3: Kirkwall - Stromness

G's birthday and a day exploring Orkney was a pretty nice way to spend it. We did a loop of the island taking in the ancient settlement of Skara Brae, the ring of Brodgar and nearby standing stones. This picture is taken from the Comet Stone looking back towards Brodgar. I wasn't expecting the area to feel so peaceful, but there was certainly something special and impressive about the stones We also stumbled upon an archaeological dig, where we sponsored a square and learnt more about the process of the dig. We spent the evening in Stromness; the capital of Orkney with pretty harbour, good food and some fine birthday ales.
