Four miles for Charity.

Another Cross Bay Walk this weekend. Each one raises money for a Charity.

The walks are led by Cedric Robinson, the official Queen's Guide to the Sands. This is an office that has existed for hundreds of years and even has a tied cottage. In the morning before each walk Cedric comes across the sands from the north bank checking whether the quicksands have shifted and marking the safe route with laurel branches. He then has to lead two or three hundred walkers across from Arnside before the next tide comes in.

The walk is about four miles and when you begin you feel you are heading towards the Isle of Man. From Kents Bank many people come back on the train which is usually so full that the conductor is unable to collect fares.

Looking at the picture above Knottman, who has done the crossing twice, can tell you that the walkers trainers will no longer be white. They will be covered with estuarine mud.

But its good fun
