Boot Hill
Across Arizona today to Tombstone. After an early check-in at the Lookout Lodge (a very early check-in, in fact, as we didn't realise we'd crossed a timezone and gained an hour), we drove down into town looking for sasparilla and good times. Tombstone is kind of like the Disney version of Lincoln though, as the Rough Guide suggests, whilst it might be a bit more tacky it's also, perhaps, a bit more fun. So we ate an ice cream, watched a fabulous sixties-made 'Historama' history of 'The Town Too Tough To Die' (a mix of film footage and mechanical diorama with a voiceover by Vincent Price), attended the kind of gunfight where you're encouraged to boo the baddies and cheer the good guys and ate burgers in Long Nose Kate's Saloon. Later on we wandered around the surprisingly atmospheric Boot Hill Cemetery and then repaired to our lookout to watch a beautiful cinemascope sunset over the mountains...
