Why are my gooseberries so small

This is a one pence piece next to my gooseberries. They were the same last year but not as many being the first year I had it. I was given the plant by a friend, potted it into a tub to overwinter then planted it in the ground there are lots of berries on it and they are lovely red desert ones, but the size amazes me, I've made them into Jam because being so small they are mostly skin and not much centre, but they taste OK. I've also made Rhubarb  and Ginger Jam today.
