A walk in the woods
I was awoken quite early by my phone receiving a "WhatsApp" message. I put my glasses on and read it. It was from our son saying "We're all ok Mum, so don't worry."
Of course, as all Mum's know, I was by now in full worry mode and sat bolt upright. A quick look at the BBC news revealed that there had been the worst typhoon to hit Taiwan for many years, and that there was a huge amount of damage, several deaths and many injuries.
As I write (Sunday morning) I'm listening to the news and hear that the typhoon has now hit mainland China, and caused more destruction, although it has lost a lot of its ferocity after crossing the Taiwan Straits and hitting the mainland. The winds in Taipei were measured at 142 mph, but it has now reduced to "a mere" 89 mph in China.
We spoke to our family on Skype later and found that they had had a lot of flooding on the flat roof (up to our son's knees) and some had come into the house too, but thankfully they are unscathed otherwise. He had seen pictures of a motorbike flying up into the air, and of some of the parked-up planes at the main airport, (which had to be closed) where the wheels of the planes were actually lifting off the ground in the wind.
We went for a walk late afternoon in some nearby woods, as it was too hot to walk through fields. It was lovely and cool under the tree canopies and we didn't see a single person (or dog!).
