The Old Pumping Station

Now the Cambridge Museum Of Technology. I went for a walk along Riverside, and looked in the museum today. Interesting to see so much old equipment. As it's not far from where I live, I shall go again, take the grandchildren and get some more pictures.  This is the steam engine and sewage pump, built  by Hathorn Davey Co and installed in 1894. The large red disc is called a rocking disc because it rotates a quarter of a turn one way, then rotates the other way. As it does not rotate continuously it is not a flywheel. The disc converts the horizontal movement of the piston rod to the vertical movement required by the pumps.. There are two identical pumps, one being used and one being maintained.. There are special events for children during the holidays. I found it quite fascinating and remember the place from my childhood as I passed by on my way to school. It closed down in 1968 and after several public demonstrations it was saved from demolition and became an Industrial Heritage site. The extra picture is of some of the large spanners.
