Havana, Cuba
Our first three days in Cuba have flown by. We arrived in Havana and went straight to Casa Luis where we'd booked to stay. In Cuba you either stay in expensive hotels or people's homes so we've stayed in Luis' lovely but small home for the last few days. He doesn't speak a word of English but is a lovely guy and we've gotten by through a series of charades and practising our very limited Spanish. We've also had his three chihuahuas to keep us company. We've wondered streets of Havana especially it's old town (Havana Vieja) and taken in all that this surreal place had to offer. The bars have more musicians than customers, the streets smell of cigars and petrol fumes, and there are lots of people standing around or sitting by the street while children play football in the middle of the roads, but everyone's smiling and having a laugh.
Some of the highlights so far have been; visiting the four different large Plazas that Havana Vieja has to offer - where we've taken in the music and sipped on mojitos, walking the Malecon - passing numerous musicians and fishermen while watching the beautiful sunsets each evening, visiting Revolutionary Plaza - where there are massive murals in honour of two of the most important revolutionaries, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfeugos, and visiting the Museo de Revolucion - where we learned the complex history of Cuba via propaganda tinted exhibits and saw where previous Cuban leaders including Fidel Castro, ran the country from.
