Never mind the rain

It rained on and off for most of the time, but we had a great day. We went to Fishbourne Roman Palace and what an amazing place. We planned on visiting for a few hours in the morning and ended up staying most of the day. I had seen pictures of the wonderful mosaic floors, but to see them close up and in situ and find out how they were discovered was brilliant. A nicely laid out museum, perfect walkways to take you round the remains of the North Wing of this remarkable building and, best of all, two excellent guided tours. Our guide was an archaeologist who had worked on the site, very knowledgeable, but also highly entertaining.
   
I loved all of it and would happily visit again. My blip is just one of many, many photos I took. This is the finest, and most famous, of the mosaics – Cupid on a Dolphin. As an extra I have added another mosaic floor, interesting as it has a Celtic Knot in the centre, evidence perhaps that the Roman and the native cultures were likely to come together at certain points. It also shows clearly the tessellated border, made up of discarded pieces of stone broken into tiny pieces and reused - early recycling!
