Gorges de la Diosaz
An unusual short walk for us today - but we thought it was about time that we went and saw what all the fuss was about at one of the main local tourist attractions; at €6 each I wasn't expecting much - but this 90 minute round trip was worth every penny. Pretty squarely aimed at the school child market - the info boards on flora, fauna, geology and historical facts & myths were right up my street - they were also bi-lingual so I could practice some semi-technical French.
To be honest I'd quite like to go again - the gorge owners now have a deal with EDF that the full force of water runs through the gorge for July & Aug. and it's amazingly powerful - but I suspect that its also very very peaceful and a nice place for contemplation the rest of the year.
First developed philanthropically in the late 19th Century the paths are for a long way simply bolted onto to the gorge sides with air beneath your feet - in 1875 that must have been a real achievement - it doesn't look like it would be that easy nowadays - the gorge is far far too narrow to helicopter anything into place as is often the case in the Alps.
Highly recommended for a restful easy day.
