Salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor

The Salad Burnet plant has male, bisexual and female flowers. The top flowers are male, middle flowers bisexual (which makes it self-polinating) and the female flowers grow on the top of the cluster.  I have used Salad Burnet flowers in salads and as a garnish for drinks .  It has been used to prevent haemorrhages and internal bleeding, and long ago soldiers would drink tea made from the herb before going into battle in the hopes that any wounds received would be less severe. Like Borage, Burnet was best known for its ability to "lighten the heart" and was most often served in wine.  "The leaves stiped in wine and dronken, doth comfort and rejoice the hart .” (Dodoens, 16th Century).  What more more could a good girl wish for!  The extra shows the whole plant to show leaves.
