When is a lily not a lily?

I'm amazed at the number of plants a part whose common name is 'lily'. Having tried to find out why, I've come up with a total blank. The name 'lily' is supposed to be derived from the Greek word 'leiron', though I'm not sure how that works either!

So the two plants in today's plant combo are both lilies, and not lilies. The white flower, which is growing in the Round Pond at Arduaine, is Zantedeschia aethiopica, from South Africa and Lesotho, and is commonly called African Lily, Calla Lily, Altar Lily, Arum Lily, Egyptian Lily - and others. The orange plant growing on the bank behind it is Alstroemeria aurea, from Chile and Argentina and is known as the Peruvian Lily - for some reason - unless you live in Chile where it's called the Inca Lily! Confused? No, why should you be!

This of course brings up a very important question. In the comic song 'My Old Man's a Dustman', one line says 'My dustbin's absolutely full of lilies'; to which plant do you think Lonnie Donegan was referring?

Second question. Is it healthy to write so much rubbish every day on Blipfoto?
