The Unexpected Arch
A past owner had bolted the Yellow Room radiator to the wood panelling beneath the window and had chiselled away at the mouldings to get the thermostatic valve in. On the whole a major hash had been made.
Later (I'm guessing) owners had hung long curtains over the whole affair, which is somewhat counter-productive for a radiator.
Anyway, as part of the Great Plumb the rad has been moved, which allowed me access to the damaged panel area, which was loose anyway so the first task was to get it out.
That wasn't trivial, especially with this place's love affair with nails, but having done so, we found this arch in the brickwork. With a bit of extrapolation, it must be part of the structure over what is now a bay window at the back of the house.
I'm quite glad most external walls here have three layers of brick, especially as there doesn't seem much holding these together.
