EYESORES,DOGS KENNELS,MORGUES
As one City Councillor described them in 1927 - "Eyesores, Dog Kennels & Morgues," I dont know which they look more like !!
This was the mood of the people of Christchurch with the construction of these Municipal Electricity Substations throughout the City.
This is a continuation of my 'small bits of architecture' series
By the late 1920's the proliferation of unattractive and obtrusive substations in residential areas began to atract intense critisism and debate - the CCC(christchurch City Council) and the MED(Municipal Electricity Department were accussed of disfiguring the city!!
In their defence - the MED had to determine the sizing of these little buildings to house the switchgear. the interier height had to be 3.65 metres for safety.
Another said of them they were Pavillions,Temples with 4 square walls!
Well keen debate in the 1920's - whats changed ?? there are still quite a few left as I mentioned in my 2 July blip of the One in Bealey Ave.
This one is in Ferry Road. -
Nice one MED they are now heritage listed !!
