If someday it should happen...
...that a blip must be found… rounding a corner on the way home, I was met with a blaze of yellow produced by a normally nondescript tree, briefly transformed by fresh leaves at this time of year. However, the light was failing, my photo was rubbish and I’ve had to find a subject for yet another desperation blip.
My eyes lit on a photo of a soulful looking Pepsi (our beloved mongrel, who disappeared last year) gazing at me from the shelf above my desk. However, on removing the glass, I rediscovered the long-lost photo above. It dates back to around 1985, when our group put on The Mikado. HH played the Lord High Executioner and I was in the chorus, and wardrobe lady – nothing like running up 40-odd kimonos (with help from my friends). Very odd, actually – some people from the Japanese consulate came to the show and were tittering quietly behind their hands. It seems that the white (or coloured, in this case) detail around the neck is strictly for women. Ah well, no Google to help in those days, in fact no internet, and couldn't find much in the libraries either. Daunted at the idea of making loads of wigs, and with funds not stretching to buying or hiring them, I asked all the ladies to make their own, out of black wool. Pretty monstrous, but hopefully OK from a distance.
Nice day today – we gave up on the idea of golf, as HH wanted to finish his work (and did), so we only left home at midday. Stopping on the hill to buy cheese and pâté, we received a heart-warming welcome. A month or so ago, I had found one of the girls who worked there in floods of tears in the loos, and spent some time trying to comfort her. Today she was behind the cheese counter and was all smiles, ‘ my loves’ and special attention, very sweet. She’s been through another hard patch since then (discrimination from some of her white colleagues), but said she had come through it and was all right now.
We reached the club in time to have lunch with the golfers, then HH stayed on for a committee meeting while I came home to a riotous welcome from the dogs. So quickly out for a long ‘ car walk’ (me riding and them running), to use up some of their energy before they knocked me over and devoured me.
