Heraklion
The grand plan had been to wait until late afternoon to go to The archaeological sit at Knossos so the light would be good for photos, but what began as a perfect sunny day became overcast as time went by and the plan changed, with the Knossos visit postponed until tomorrow before we moved on to Aghios Nikolaos.
A bit of shopping, then a city tour in an open-too bus (which ironically included a stop at Knossos, by which time the weather was much improved), then more shopping, then some pit stops, then back home for the ceremonial removal of my wrist half-cast.
While out and about we'd noticed increasing evidence of support for a No vote in Sunday's referendum, with graffiti popping up on street corners, and overheard chat about people's opinions. This came to a bit of a head in the evening when we stopped in Central bar Sophie our waitress asked us for advice about how to vote, since we were Irish and had been through the whole austerity thing. The blip shows a group of young people we came across who were promoting a No vote and were gathering signatures in support. (Note: "oxi" in Greek means No.)
Our evening meal was in a seafood restaurant near the harbour which we'd spotted from the tourist bus (my prawn saganaki was fab). Pit stops here and there afterwards ended in Swing bar which is located in a lovely quiet oasis we'd found off the main shopping street. Indeed, our opinion of Heraklion changed considerably during the day as we came across several nice parts of the city.
