King John's Hunting Lodge, Axbridge

We walked for an hour or so this morning on Wavering Down , which commands fine views over the Bristol Channel, the North Devon coast and across the Mendips and Somerset Levels in the other direction.

Unfortunately, none of my landscape shots came out how I was hoping in the somewhat flat light, so here you have the replica of a King's head which was used as a the sign when the Hunting Lodge in Axbridge was used as a pub at some time in the past.

Originally built c. 1460 as a wool merchant's house, it now houses a museum, run under the auspices of the National Trust.

We'd enjoyed lunch in what has become our favourite local cafe, The Almshouse Tea Rooms: today, we had grilled goat's cheese in a crushed walnut, sweet chilli and apricot jam crust with salad.

We'd waited no more than 10 minutes but the owner insisted on giving us a second complimentary drink because of the delay and then talked us through the recipe. Highly recommended if you're in this sleepy and charming old town, just off the main square.
