A Century

Today there was a nationwide celebration of women's right to vote. In 1915 women over 40 received the right to vote. Our company was closed at noon and everybody was supposed to go downtown to participate. A few of us walked from the hot springs where women in Reykjavík used to wash all laundry. It is about four km from there to the centre of town and they had to carry the wet clothes on their backs. It must have been very hard.

Anyway, this is Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the former president giving a fabulous speech from the balcony of Alþingi. The organizers had not provided a good enough sound system, so it was difficult to hear, but there was absolute silence while she was speaking. I thought that just showed how much regard everybody has for her.
