Play Within Play, Play House Within Parish House
I and a friend went to see a play. The Island by Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona has been getting great reviews and we were not disappointed. At Robben Island Prison in South Africa, two cell mates perform Antigone before the prison population.
The Lantern Theater Company is my favorite of all the theaters in the city, and I've seen dozens of performances there --several, in fact, starring Frank X, who was half the 2-man show this time. Lantern's venue is St. Stephen's Theater, which is the back-end of the Episcopal church of the same name.
St. Stephen's was built in 1822 and stood high over the neighborhood for a lifetime, but now taller buildings make it easy to overlook. Legend has it that Ben Franklin flew his famous kite on this very site.
Until now I did not know that these are early Tiffany windows. They face West, so I'll have to stop in some afternoon when they look their best.
What a pleasant evening it was!
