Column

I travelled to London on the overnight coach, arriving at 7am and after a strong coffee was ready to hit the museums. The museums (and most of the interesting shops) weren't open until 10, so I took photos of curved buildings for a future project.
The V&A is one of my favourite museums because of the sheer variety of the exhibits. I like the Cast Courts, which opened in 1873. This is a plaster cast of Trajan's Column. The real column is in Rome. The cast is made from sections of plaster stuck to a brick chimney. It's too big to fit even in this enormous room, so was made in two halves. It enabled students of art and those not wealthy enough to visit Rome an opportunity to see this important monument. The column in Rome has suffered over time from pollution, but the cast retains most of the original features.
