Centre area of a 100mm (4 inch) diameter silicon wafer. Made in 1988, at the former Motorola factory in East Kilbride. The little black dots are to indicate which of the individual silicon chips (or integrated circuits) have failed in testing. They'll be rejected when it comes to the splitting up the wafer stage. Though in this case, the whole lot is being ejected in a big clear out, prior to the move to the new campus.
