Going For Gold

 Out with an extra U3A geology trip to Leadhills to learn about the mining industry there. We began with an introduction in the old library (the first subscription library in Scotland), then proceeded to different sites of mining interest. Leadhills was a source not just of lead, silver and gold but also  many other minerals associated with lead and zinc. We were then given the opportunity to try panning for gold from spoil taken from (and later returned to) a pit dug by our guides; although there is little left, one of our members did strike it rich find a speck the size of a flea.

On the hill we passed a few remains of rabbits but were particularly puzzled by the skull (see the extra photo), which appears to be of a raptor. Over the past few years it seems there has been much concern about raptor *unpleasant image alert* persecution by a local estate and arguments to refute estate involvement. Suffice to say we did see a buzzard and raven. But only one.

There is also concern that the toilets in the village are closed 'due to budget cuts' so if you plan to visit, go before you arrive!
