Cumbria Here I Come

A trip to Wetheral

I took Misty to Wetheral just the other side of Carlisle  this morning for a walk along the river Eden.  I should go there more often as its not that far away.  We had a lovely walk and saw Corby Castle with its cascading waterfall opposite the river which is surrounded by ancient woodland.  As we wandered through Wetheral Woods we came across some man made caves some 40 feet above the river bank.  It is thought they were used by monks as early as the 14th century as a refuge during the border warfare and for storing grain.   We also came across Wetheral Priory Gatehouse from the 15th century which is all that remains of the priory which was founded around 1100.  You can actually go inside which is worth doing if you are in area, and climb up the concrete spiral stairs to the top.

Today's blip was taken from the caves and there are quite a few names carved into the stone.  It was a toss up between this one and the extra one.

Its been chucking it down since we got back and its sooo cold and very windy.  Just ordered some more oil.  Have never got through so much.
