One species each day (from my backyard)
My initial plan was to name all native tree species in the garden, but I've drifted off because it's easier to photograph characteristic fruit or flowers of just anything that grows around the house. Here's a Diospyros kaki that Ellen plated a few years ago. It produces nice orange fruit, but can only just manage if the season is long enough. This year, although we've had a nice long extension of the summer with many warm autumn days, the fruits aren't quite ready yet and the leaves have all dropped. The leaves turn bright orange in autumn, and the tree stands out against most of the native trees that stay green all year round, but it didn't last long this year and I missed taking a picture of the entire orange tree. So here's a couple of its fruits. If you look closely you can see a sticky mistletoe seed left behind by a bird on top of the left fruit. If it germinates at all, it won't live for long because the fruit will drop off or be picked soon. I'll post a photograph of a mistletoe plant later on.
