Pensive Prince

For the last two or three weeks, the herons above my house have been quiet. One has been on the nest at all times. I assumed that there were eggs in the nest. The eggs take about 25 days to incubate.

As of last evening, they are suddenly more active. This morning I watched Prince (that's what we call him) fly to a nearby tree several times and bring twigs back to Lady Violet. He bowed and displayed his feathers each time he presented her with a twig, which she then wove into the nest. They are courting again! I can only guess that something happened to the first batch of eggs, and they are trying again.
