Salisbury Cathedral Tower
In the mid fourteenth century medieval builders added a spire weighing 6500 tons to the top of the cathedral. Since then, from time to time, metal reinforcements have been added to keep it upright. Prince Charles led an international effort to raise money for additional reinforcement by selling glass pieces that could be inscribed. There are hundreds of them like this one I saw (after ascending "332 vertigo inducing stairs"). Not only that, I saw that much of the cathedral's interior structure is made of wooden beams made from ancient forests of magnificent Oak trees.
