Over the Fence

The washing is done on the other side of the fence (and their grass is greener).

Had a browse of "A Biographical Register 1788-1939 (Notes from the name index of the Australian Dictionary of Biography)" at the library and was surprised to encounter:

EDWARDS, Sarah Isabel (Marion) (1881-1956), Transvestite, Vic. and Qld. b Wales 1881 dau of Edwin Charles E; d. Melb Mar. 1956; unm. Arr. Aust.  1885: reared Geelong: orphaned at 14: difficulties as a woman: worked as man Bill Edwards from 1897, bushworker, storeman, french polisher, horse dealer, house painter, barman and on stn Qld: ret. Melb. 1904: arrested for burglary 1905, escaped to Qld, extradited: sex discovered at trial 1907: acquitted: worked with wax works, cyclorama shows: SP bookie's penciller Melb. c. 1930-1956. 

They say that women have to be twice as good to go as far as a man- well it seems Sarah/Bill Edwards outdid them all in abilities and determination! One can only wonder at her life in those times.
