Walk upon England’s mountains green?
 
I do like a walk with a purpose, so when I found a little book of Walks with History in the Lake District it cried out to be bought. So this is a project – to work through these walks in order, looking at how centuries of human habitation have left their mark on the landscape.
 
And we started today with the earliest times for which there is evidence: Neolithic – and Castlerigg Stone Circle. We were last here in January as I chose to use it for my Blip 1,000. Today there were many more people around, as there usually are, but our walk, starting and finishing at the Circle, took us on a ramble round Low Rigg and the foot of surrounding fells, passing Tewet Tarn and the lovely church of St John’s in the Vale and always within sight of Blencathra. It was a cool day with a lot of cloud and only glimpses of the sun, but perfect for walking.
